Khees and the first milk: how India already knows colostrum

Ask anyone who grew up near a dairy cow or buffalo and they'll remember khees: the thick, yellowish first milk after calving, often cooked into a set sweet. That is colostrum. India didn't need a lab to notice it was different.

Khees, peeyush and colostrum

Regional names differ. Khees is common across north India, and peeyush (or peeyusha) appears in classical Sanskrit and Ayurvedic usage. The idea is the same everywhere: the first milk after birth is thicker, richer and changes quickly into ordinary milk within days.

Traditional practice also had a rule: the calf drinks first. That instinct matches the science. The first hours matter most, which is exactly the point of the six-hour Colostrum6 story.

What changes between khees and a supplement

Home khees is fresh, unprocessed and varies from animal to animal. A colostrum supplement is collected, tested, processed and standardised so it can be stored and taken in measured amounts. Anovité describes Colostrum6 as first-milking colostrum collected within six hours, then tested batch by batch.

If you're comparing products, use the five-question colostrum checklist. Collection timing is the first question for a reason.

A note on traditional use

Cultural familiarity is not a health claim. Raw khees carries food-safety risks, and a supplement still isn't right for everyone. People with a dairy allergy, pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone under treatment should speak to a doctor first.
